Jaffa

I think I had done one trade ad before this one but the Jaffa brief was the first proper, above the line, in the press, going to be seen by my mum and dad, ad that I got at Saatchi & Saatchi. I could draw match stick men but Pete could draw proper men so we had decided that he would be the art director and I would be the writer. But Pete had followed the call of love and left Saatchis to go back to Leeds so I was working as a lone writer - which meant that Paul Arden art directed the ads. The illustrated ad came about when Paul came in on a Monday morning clutching The Sunday Times Magazine. He opened it to reveal a whole batch of stunning illustrations by Hargrave Hands who he then commissioned to do this illustration of the whole Jaffa family. My job was to write the headline and also the copy about each fruit. I could do the latter but only 4 weeks into the job I was so inexperienced that I wasn’t sure what was required for the headline. Jeff Stark popped in to help and ‘More choice fruit from Jaffa & Sun’ was born. So by hanging onto Arden and Stark’s coat tails I had my first Campaign Press Award and my first ad in the D&AD annual.
