About halfway through year two I teamed up with Pete Camponi, a top bloke and top at doing ads too. We created a portfolio together and in the last term of our last year went down to London to show our book around. We had appointments with Malcolm Gaskin at TBWA, Steve Grounds at KMP, Dave Buchanan and Mike Hannet at BMP, Ian Potter at FCO, Len Weinreich at FCB and with a man called Paul Arden at Saatchi & Saatchi. Unlike the other people we’d gone to see, we didn’t know that much about him. We had dressed carefully for the day. I was skinny and wore black drainpipes, a black denim jacket and had black spiky hair. Pete wore a big, bright orange boiler suit. We could see Arden’s eyes widen as we walked in and we both thought we’d blown it already because he was wearing a suit.. But in fact he loved it - he loved being surprised. And he liked the portfolio enough for his next sentence to be ‘When can you start?’ We said that we finished term on Friday 5th July and that we could come in on Monday 8th. Keen or what?
